The half-marathon was organised by the NZ Cancer Society and was based on a concept developed in the UK in 2012. Walkers followed a route around the Auckland CBD and started at 8.30pm.
The Nordic Walkers raised over $NZ10,000. They trained together for six weeks and, as the event was held in the evening, included familiarisation sessions at night. The light rain at the start quickly cleared to a beautiful, fine evening and saw the whole team complete the distance. For some, this was the first time that they had completed a half marathon. Included in the team were some cancer survivors.
